Our story begins with Joseph Lusardi who immigrated from Italy near the turn of the century. His trucking company began as a daily ice delivery service. While running his truck route between New Jersey and New York, customers began asking him to transport large furniture. Recognizing a greater opportunity, Joseph shifted his focus and Liberty Transportation was born.
By 1950 Liberty had expanded to a fleet of four trucks and a 10,000-square-foot warehouse in Newark, NJ, servicing the local areas. Based on size, that would be considered an above average moving company in today’s marketplace.
As America grew, so did Liberty. Under the leadership of Donald Lusardi Sr., Joseph’s son, the company joined Global Van Lines, expanding its reach beyond the local area and becoming a nationwide moving provider.
After eight years with Global Van Lines, Liberty transitioned to United Van Lines. This marked the beginning of a partnership that has lasted over 50 years, helping customers move across the country with trusted service.
With business booming following the United Van Lines partnership, Liberty outgrew its original Newark facility. The company relocated to a larger warehouse, giving the growing team the space needed to serve an expanding customer base and take on bigger moves across the country.
The third generation — Donald Lusardi Jr. and John Lusardi — ushered in a new chapter by expanding Liberty’s commercial moving services and relocating the company to its current 100,000-square-foot headquarters in Berkeley Heights, NJ.

Our History

The world has changed enormously since Liberty Transportation and Storage first opened its doors in 1920—but one thing that’s remained constant is our passion for service.

Our story began when our founder emigrated from Italy near the turn of the century and started a business delivering ice—a vital service in the early 1900s. As he traveled regularly between New Jersey and New York, local residents began asking him to transport large furniture items along the way. Recognizing the growing demand, he expanded his services, and with the rise of powered vehicles and trucks, Liberty Transportation and Storage was born.

Since then, Liberty has been proudly passed down through generations of the Lusardi family. We’ve continued to grow and evolve in response to customer needs—whether by joining national van lines, expanding our warehouse footprint, or exploring new areas of service.

At Liberty, we see ourselves as partners in your success. Whether you’re relocating your home or business, we understand how important your move is—and we take that responsibility seriously. Our commitment to reliability, care, and customer satisfaction has been the driving force behind everything we do for over a century.
